Joseph Barbera died of natural causes at his home in Studio City, Los Angeles on December 18, 2006, ending a successful seventy year career in animation.

Thanks for all the inspiration Joe. Hanna Barbera Cartoons have greatly influenced my own work and will continue to do so in the future!

I had these Ed Emberly "how to draw" books when I was a kid in the 70s. There was some pretty funny stuff in em, but they were basically about just using simple shapes to draw. I found one in my office last night, and was inspired by Ed. I love trying to keep things as simple as possible...and those books really drive that home. After checking out Ed's easy ways to draw animals I ruffed this little guy out and colored him up using some new brushes I made in illustrator. Just havin fun.

Well...we've started design on season 3 of betty! Its pretty exciting, i think we're going to have fun this year! Looking through all the stuff from seasons 1 and 2, I found this title card from ep 99 "License Degill". I only did one title card during season 2 (yikes no time!) and...this is it! I wrote the story for this ep, and Adrian Raeside, one of our funniest writers turned it into something watchable. Thanks Raeside!

With Halloween quickly approaching,
Carnival Cartoons has decided to celebrate the season
of ghosts, goblins, and all things geeky and freaky, by
commissioning a handful of uber talented tattoo
artists to take a stab at giving "Buzz Carney - The
Tattooed strongman" (Carnival's first independently
produced vinyl collector toy) some "Fresh Ink" .
These hand picked artists will have a chance to
customize blank buzz toys with their own take on his
tats, and their work will be displayed at Carnival
Cartoons' table at this february's New York Comic con.

Now... here's where you get involved... Carnival
Cartoons announces it's "Buzz Carney Custom Tattoo
Competition"! In conjunction with the customs already
being produced, Carnival wanted to give you a chance
to be a part of the action as well. Upon request,
Carnival will be sending out templates as seen above
(please email for high quality vector version) for you
to show them your wicked tattoo skills! Kick-off for
the custom competition starts on Halloween (Oct.31st)
& will conclude Nov. 30th. There will be a Custom
Buzz Blog set up to display all of the entries.
Although a template is provided, the boys at carnival
encourage you to be creative... (color outside of the
lines, if you so feel inclined). The grand prize winner
will win his/her very own Buzz vinyl primed & ready for
customization. The grand prize winner will also win a
screenprinted carnival cartoons t-shirt designed by
GarnetSyberg-Olsen & a fitted "Pierce the Wild Child"
Carney hat.

Well finally...Charlie James Syberg-Olsen (aka "the deuce") arrived at 12:15 am august 26th. At 8 pounds 11 ounces, hes a healthy little tyke, and once he kicks a slight infection...i think hes gonna be a real rascal. The delivery was fast and furious, and we almost didnt make it to the hospital on time (seriously...I was haulin ass to get there so we didnt have the little guy in the car!). My daughter wanted to name him "cuddle"...but the Missus and I thought that with a name like that...he might suffer a little grief later on in life. And hey...theres a lot of Charlies that have gone on to greatness...Bronson,Bukowski, Schultz, Parker, Brown, Jones(chuck), Emerson Winchester III, Pride, Chaplin...etc. Hey Charlie, welcome to the family!

Well, quite a while back we were contacted by a UK based magazine for model and toy collectors. They felt that Buzz was one of the stronger figures they had seen in a while and asked us if it would be cool if they included him in a round-up of cool toys currently on the market. Of course we said yes! And well...today I just got some tear sheets from our contact over there. Kinda cool to see what they had to say...pretty nice review. More Betty designs and color. These are from another ep that takes place underwater. But...this time, it was a western style show, complete with train robberies and some old mineshaft tunnels. I hate doing the same thing twice...so for this planet (Ainrofilac Ubilam) it was a challenge to make it look different than our other underwater shows...and also give it a "western" feel. (Just a note...its hard to make a wet environment feel dry and dusty!) Anyway, I think it worked out nicely, and once our afx guys worked their magic with some sweet ripple fx etc...it was a pretty cool show.

Heres a ruff for a piece I'm gonna do for the SHADY CHARACTERS show that Jared is putting on at the Live With Animals gallery in NYC at the end of july. This drawing is just pure wank!...Fun shapes, and fun ideas...and no purpose whatsoever. But.. I was just thinking that on some level we're all connected somehow...derived from a bunch of shady characters that made their home in the primordial ooze at the dawn of time. Too deep?...well how bout this...I put one of my boogers under a microscope and this drawing is what it looked like. Anyway, if i have time, i'm going to paint it. Heres A couple bits of artwork that I did for a series idea my partner JD and I have. Its called "The Pop-Cult Picture Show"...basically its 26 short films that pay tribute to 50s and 60s b movies. All the short films star the same actor, Hamilton "Hambone" Bonaparte. So...its like a film festival of Hambone's ...um..."finest work". Anyway...I did like 26 fake movie posters for the pitch pack...and a bunch of locations. JD (as usual) did some kickass Character stuff! Here's Ham...as "Turk" a ruff and tumble hood who becomes overly obsessed with souping up his ride..only to find out hes created a mechanical monster...HELLROD! In the flick...Hambone also does hellrod's voice. Yeah..the car talks. Mostly about running people over, lawn jobs, and being thirsty for a swig of oil and stuff. Stupid? Maybe...but i love stupid! In one scene...hellrod goes nuts after someone tries to shove a banana in his tail pipe. He's not that kind of car!

FEATHERED FRIEND-ZY

Yep...its happening! Veteran Storyboard Artist, company gag man, and all around Bon Vivant, Patrick "Jimbo" Pakula is starting thumbnails on the storyboard for "Feathered Friend-zy" A kickass short that Jared and I have been dying to make but have been to damn... busy /lazy/drunk/insert any excuse...to get going on. We have a killer script written by big time LA writer Chris Brown, and a heap of sweet designs. I thought i'd post some. Pat we love you! But not..like..."LOVE"...love...(like Ted & Doreen love you) more like "luv"...love. Anyway...both JD and I will post the goods as we go.

Oy Robot...a fantastic Betty episode from season II aired on the weekend. Great job everybody! Here are a few of my key locations from that show. It was super fun to design and color...it all takes place inside a giant robot. So...to some degree I tried to add a bit of human biology to locations.

Cartoonapalooza was a raging success last night! Thanks to the brass at atomic cartoons for pulling off a kickass event! The Numbskulls rocked the house, and fun was had by all... except of course for the mysterious old guy pictured above. It seems my good buddy and office mate Pat Pakula has taken to roughing up harmless senior citizens for fun. Oh, well...if ya can't handle a tumble down the stairs...ya might as well stay home. Haha...just kidding buddy! TEQUILA CRAZY EYES!

So...i was thinking...maybe I will start a separate blog strictly devoted to bg design. Kinda like the the sooper sweet "Character Design Blog". I love what they are doing with all the character design stuff, and interviews and whatnot. Since i've been designing bgs for the last ten years... i feel like I might be able to offer a word or two of insight, but I'd especially be interested in talking to other bg designers and painters about their process. There is a heap of good stuff out there...and i think it could work. Anybody else agree? Anyway i guess i gotta come up with a name for the blog and stuff...and track some folks down who might let me throw a barrage of questions at them. In the meantime...heres a bg from a short Jared (my carnival cartoons partner) and I are itching to make. The short is called "Feathered Friendzy" and its based on our show idea "Horse & Buggy". Its a real down-home, country style cartoon...so I tried to give the locations a sort of folk art feel.

Another Gray(scale) Sunday

Happy New Year! Well its another grey and cloudy day in Vancouver. In honor of the weather i've decided to post a grayscale drawing every sunday. I always start out a design by building a grayscale version first, before moving on to color. Kinda helps to wrap your head around the drawing before getting caught up in color choices. Anyway, I love the way the drawings look in this form. And...i've got alot of em! Heres something i did while helping to develop a show at work...can't say what its from...but I wanted to go in a real fifties direction. Ultimately that was nixed by the various parties involved. Oh well...still came out of it with a sweet looking doodle! Keep a look out on sundays for more color-free shtuff.

I didn't get my shit together in time to land any wall space...but i'll be selling some of the prints I've blah blah blogged about in previous posts in the gallery's store. Toy Story

You may have seen this badboy on my partner Jared's blog, but dammit...I can't help myself I had to post it too! We're so excited about our first toy. It was independently produced through our company Carnival Cartoons, with help from Eric Nocella (a kickass toy sculptor!) of Goldmane Entertainment, and Erick Chatel (best project manager ever!) from ESC Toy. The factory is pumping out a limited run of 250 as I write this, and we'll have em by late january. It comes in a fancy display box (that will be numbered) and just for fun we're including a signed certificate of authenticity (like there will be alot of "fakes" floating around). So...if ya want a truly sweet piece of collectible vinyl artwork keep checking back here, and i'll let ya know the final cost and how to get em on the web. If you're in Vancouver, see me in my office at Atomic Cartoons, and i'll sell ya one out of the trunk of my car (haha).

Heres what i came up with for the cartoonapalooza II poster. Not quite finished, and i dunno if its approved...but I like how it looks so far. I took a little bit of sci-fi cheese, added a dash of old ruskie graphics, and finished it off with a shtickle of good old fashion "gunk" to add a distressed flavor. Can't wait to get em printed!
